The first thing we had to get used to is calling the downtown area Uptown. But this is a cool city that reminds me of a blend of other cities we’ve been too. Charlotte has a lot to offer, including the trendy art district called NoDa that reminds me of Miami’s Wynwood that has graffiti murals throughout the district to tour.
Uptown is home to some great art museums, and you can catch a professional sports game if you’re into football, soccer (futbol), baseball and basketball. About 30 minutes north is the Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is home to NASCAR. NASCAR’s Hall of Fame museum is also in Uptown. Charlotte is also home to the U.S. National Whitewater Center where you can learn about white water rafting.
Charlotte also has a lot of references to a hornet’s nest, which dates back to the Revolutionary War when the locals resisted British troops with such ferocity that they were dubbed a hornet’s nest of resistance.
North Carolina is proud of its history as one of the first 13 colonies, and you can see a lot of historical markers throughout the city that dates back to colonial times. If hiking or water activities are your thing, then Lake Norman, Uwharrie National Forest, and Crowder Mountain are no more than an hour away.
